Live by the penalty shootout, die by the penalty shootout.
That's what happened to the Rising Sun girls soccer team last week. Two days after winning on penalties, the Tigers were booted by Fallston in a shootout 0-0 (5-4 penalties) in a region semifinal game Thursday afternoon at Rising Sun High. Score one for the power of positive thinking.
Seventy-eight seconds away from a season-ending defeat to rival North East, the Rising Sun girls soccer team tied it on an Abigail Backert goal before prevailing in a penalty shootout 1-1, (3-1 penalties) Tuesday, October 30, at Calvert Regional Park. Rosa Reid, Raigan McLoughlin, and Katelyn Willis each converted a penalty kick and goalie Kira Watson made two saves in the shootout. North East's Alex Hoffman continued to have success against Elkton.
Hoffman scored what proved to be the game-winning goal with 20:04 remaining in regulation off a cross from Catie Roberts to lift the Indians girls soccer team to a 2-1 triumph over the visiting Elks in a first round playoff game Friday afternoon. Rising Sun girls soccer coach Johnny Hartnett didn't need to employ a fiery, Knute Rockne-style pregame pep talk to inspire his team heading into the game against North East Wednesday, October 10.
Last season's loss to the Indians, provided Rising Sun with sufficient motivation and turned the tables on their county and region rival with a 2-1 triumph. After being outplayed for parts of the first half, North East girls soccer coach Matt Roberts elected to move junior midfielder Savannah Dorey to more of an attacking role.
The decision paid off when Dorey scored midway through the second half to help the Indians nip Edgewood 1-0 Wednesday, October 3, on a natural grass field at Calvert Regional Park. Annalia Webb tallied twice to propel the Rising Sun girls soccer team to a 2-0 triumph over host Havre de Grace Monday night, September 24.
The Perryville girls soccer team (1-2) picked up its first win of the season by edging Elkton 2-1 Monday, September 10.
The Perryville girls soccer team opened the season with a 4-1 loss at Havre de Grace Tuesday night, September 4.
